what:  "American Girl" exhibit

venue: 19 Karen Gallery

where: Gold Coast, Australia

when: November 2014

Dana Ellyn’s “All American Girl” exhibit at 19 Karen Gallery in Gold Coast, Australia ran from November 15 through December 20, 2014. America is such a large and extremely varied place, and the themes in this exhibit cover a wide range of topics and viewpoints. The paintings pull inspiration from classic films, classic literature, veganism, and personal experiences.

The “All American Girl” series is a vibrant and provocative exploration of American identity through my unique lens. Each painting serves as a narrative thread, weaving together the diverse cultural, social, and personal influences that shape our collective consciousness.

Drawing from the nostalgia of classic films and the enduring power of literature, these works reimagine familiar icons and stories, challenging the viewer to reconsider their significance in today’s context. The series also delves into my advocacy for veganism, juxtaposing pastoral farm scenes with the realities of modern consumption, provoking thought and dialogue about our relationship with animals and the environment.

Personal experiences and observations infuse the series with authenticity, offering glimpses into my journey as an artist and an individual navigating the complexities of American life. Through bold colors, dynamic compositions, and a blend of realism and abstraction, the “All American Girl” series invites viewers to engage with the multifaceted nature of identity, tradition, and progress.

This exhibit at 19 Karen is an invitation to explore the myriad stories that define what it means to be “All American.”
